Who doesn’t like a nice cigar after cracking a crime syndicate wide open. Detective Hollandaise certainly does. It was kind of a tradition to pull out a number 2 hand rolled Dunhill Montecristo and plug away at it while basking in the warmth of having taken out the trash.
But he’d had a run of bad luck, lately. It had been 14 months since he took down a real bad criminal. I guess that’s why he pulled out a trusty number two that night in Cooper’s apartment while Cooper, himself, and the three rejects from Bunko Squad stood there looking at him in awe. He must have felt like the crime was already solved in that crook-catching noggin of his.
The irony is that the cigar brand was named after the famous novel by Alexandre Dumas, The Count of Montecristo. The famous quote from therein, being the last thought issued by the main character, Dantes:
“Until the day when God will deign to reveal the future to man, all human wisdom is contained in these two words — wait and hope.”
In reality, the detective was growing quite impatient with waiting and hoping as the world grew increasingly nonsensical. It seemed like insanity was rising up more and more often to dash anything that he deemed of having value. The celebratory puffs he allowed himself to enjoy, when the world was made temporarily safe again, fewer and farther between.
The brand was two names of a partnership. Montecristo being the brand, while Dunhill was the British distributorship.
Back in the 1970s, a Dunhill Montecristo was your average hand rolled dollar cigar. Now, if you can find one made back then, it might set you back a few hundred of dollars. A box of fresh ones will only run about $60, but while Montecristo is still around, Dunhill ceased operating back in 2018.
